Are Tiny 'Plug-In Houses' the Answer to Beijing's Sky-High Housing Prices?

It’s no secret that housing prices in the capital are out of control. Just this week a study revealed that Beijingers spend a whopping 58 percent of their paychecks on rent – that’s an average of RMB2,748 per month!

In the face of increasingly high housing costs, a lot of Beijingers are getting really creative. In December 2016, the People’s Architecture Office (PAO) went on a mission to help a woman who had no other option but to live in a tiny dilapidated home located in her parent’s courtyard just outside of the capital.

The solution? A genius concept that PAO has dubbed a “Plug-in House.”

At surface level the little house looks leaps and bounds better than the house Mrs. Fan and her son had previously resided in. But the real kicker is the Plug-in House only costs RMB67,000 (USD10,000) and was built in less than 24 hours using nothing more than a hex wrench.

The Plug-in House concept is generating all sorts of buzz. Earlier this month, the Plug-in House even made the shortlist for the World Architecture Festival’s World Building of the Year award, Business Insider reports. The winner will be announced at the festival which takes place in Berlin in November.

Perhaps Plug-in Houses really will become a thing in Beijing.
