How's this for irony? Sina Weibo, China's Twitter clone, now officially has more users than actual Twitter.

The Chinese firm's latest earnings report revealed that the platform had grown to 340 million active users per month, making it the first time ever the copycat platform surpassed its source of inspiration. Twitter, by comparison, had 328 million active users in the first quarter of 2017.

Twitter vs Weibo monthly users

Weibo already surpassed Twitter in terms of overall worth last fall, with a market cap of USD11.35billion in October 2016 (compared to Twitter's USD11.34 billion).

Weibo debuted in 2009, shortly after Twitter was first blocked in China. It went public in the US in 2014.

Despite being a popular broadcasting platform for Donald Trump, Twitter actually lost users in the beginning of 2016. It went public in 2013.
