PHOTOS: Valentine’s Day Crowds Swarm Guangzhou Metro

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and Guangzhouers were out in force – something particularly visible in metro stations across the CBD.

At shortly after 6pm yesterday, large crowds were witnessed by That’s editors at Zhujiang New Town station on Line 5, where some commuters were forced to wait nearly 40 minutes to catch a Line 3 train.

Zhujiang’s subway platforms were also a mess, with Tencent News referring to “a huge flow of people” leaving the boarding areas in a “paralyzed state.”

The Guangzhou Zoo Metro Station also experienced serious delays, with images circulating online of a lengthy queue of people trying to enter the platform area. We know the line was moving slowly, because a large number of the travelers photographed were staring blankly at their phone screens, as seen below:

Our team also witnessed delays at the Taojin, Wuyangcun and Tiyu Xilu stations, the last of which was likely swamped due to its close proximity to Taco Tuesday at Tristan’s CalMex Restaurant and Bar, which transpired last night after a six-month hiatus.
