Frigid Temperatures Expected All Week in Guangdong

It got chilly enough to huddle around the hot pot Wednesday night in the Pearl River Delta as temperatures dipped into the single digits following a balmy holiday week.

The China Meteorological Administration – taking into account our delicate skin here in the south – issued a ‘yellow warning of cold’ on Wednesday afternoon for both Guangzhou and Shenzhen (because if anything warrants extra caution, it’s nippy air).

Thursday, February 9, will see a high of 15 degrees Celsius in Guangzhou and a low of just 9 degrees at night, with a ‘real feel’ of around 7 degrees, according to AccuWeather. Those numbers are slightly higher in Shenzhen, but things will cool down for China’s Silicon Valley later this weekend.

If you were planning a daytrip in the next few days, be sure to pack a sweater, as it's expected to remain chilly in the PRD on Saturday and Sunday, with highs between 16-18 degrees and lows averaging 10 degrees Celsius in both Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Before you go splurging on cute winter hats, however, keep in mind that we’re headed for nonstop sunshine next week and highs in the mid 20s. If you’re new to the area, remember that this winter has been uncharacteristically mild compared to the ‘snowy’ day(s) we saw last year. And if it’s still too ‘hot’ for you, just wait until August.
