It’s almost winter in Shanghai and you know what that means: no, not pollution…hairy crabs season! The river crabs are considered a delicacy in this part of China and are best eaten during the late autumn and early winter when the roe of the female is at its peak.

The Central Hotel, famous for serving hairy crabs, recently hosted its annual National River Crab Contest. Coming in first was Shanghai Ocean University Professor and fishery expert Li Sifa. His crabs were crowned King and Queen, with the male ringing in at 455.2 grams and the female at 366 grams. The king was fished from east China’s Jiangxi Province. The queen came from Anhui.

Clawing their way to victory, Professor Li’s crabs beat out 1,900 crabs from over 70 farms around the country.
