New bar: The Dolores self-serves up craft beer

A self-service craft beer bar has finally opened in Shekou: The Dolores. Named after one of San Francisco’s most frequented green spaces, Dolores Park, the bar shares some of the same characteristics as its namesake – picnic food and craft beer drinkers – without having the same issues – belligerent hipsters and poor trash disposal.

Owner Sara Xie hopes to create a sense of laid-back, Northern California style with her Mexican-inspired menu, large booths and benches, weekly parties and imported beer selection. Her watering hole stands at the edge of Nanhai E-Cool, with patio seating, black-and-gray-toned interior and roll-away, walk-through windows. Sort-of-inspirational, off-beat posters rest propped against the wall saying, “Think BIG” and “Only dead fish go with the flow.”

The fridge space here is smaller compared to other self-service bars in Shenzhen, but the options for mixed drinks and a more extended menu make up for that. Like other self-service options, The Dolores keeps the prices moderate for their imported selection, with BrewDog produce ranging from RMB50-58, Rogue Dead Guy Ale for RMB35 and a Vedett IPA going for RMB35. Those wanting something eclectic and fruity can try the Pink Killer (RMB35), a pink grapefruit-flavored beer.

However, for something unique to The Dolores, patrons should grab the Lebanese 961 Lager (RMB18). Lime, thyme and spicy hops combine for a sweet beverage that finishes dry. Guinness men won’t like it, but those new to drinking lagers might.

The bar stands next to the fridges where customers can choose from a range of cocktails (RMB45-50), fresh juice (RMB30) or coffees (RMB18-30). Patrons can also order snacks and Mexican-influenced food like the slightly sweet but tasty chicken wrap (RMB38). Some might want something more appropriate for their Lebanese beer though, and can opt instead for the peppery hummus (RMB20), best when paired with the mini sliced tomatoes.

Only opened in April, The Dolores has plans for live music, a tea set and a more extensive menu in the future. Right now, Xie is throwing weekly parties on Friday nights to try out different menu options with buffet-style food and discounted beer.

Boasting an excellent selection, easy-to-access location and well-priced drinks, The Dolores has the potential to become one of Shekou’s most-frequented hangouts.
