New bar: Sanho is a no go

A series of bad life choices may find you in the new Longhua nightclub, Sanho. Despite its very odd location in an outlet mall a half hour north of Window of the World, patrons need a reservation to enter. Perhaps that’s just for expats though, since on our visit we saw old cadre types with Louis Vuitton fanny packs and young girls in tight dresses breeze past the five-man security team (saluting them as they entered, no less.)

Those (un)fortunate enough to get inside will, surprisingly, find the club jumping. They’ll also find it small, as the space has just 400 square meters for customers to mingle, with the rest allotted to the bar, DJ area, and so on. The music is good for those who like different sub-genres of house, and the dance floor is ideal for drunken patrons who enjoy tragically trying to mount lighted platforms in order to get their groove on. However, another small army of security guards is on hand to enforce a brutal ‘no platform dancing’ policy.

The crowd consists of large company groups, with the bar catering to all: a vast selection of Remy Martin (RMB38,880/bottle of Remy Martin Louis XIII) for the discerning Chinese boss; the Long Island iced tea (RMB55) and enigmatically named nothing (RMB50) for the workers. Even designated drivers can knock back a few of the non-alcoholic selections like the ginseng tea (RMB30).

There’s no Tsingdao served here, only Budweiser (RMB50), to which Sanho has erected a beer can shrine on the bar. The mojito (RMB55), one of the better cocktails, tastes a bit sweet but is eminently drinkable. The bartenders, the highlight of Sanho, offer friendly service and wild bottle throwing tricks a la Cocktail, the movie.

Sanho is best enjoyed during the daytime, when it’s closed, and potential customers can go shopping in the fantastic surrounding outlet mall. Other more enjoyable sites there include a Nike Factory store and an Old Navy, not to mention a replica pirate ship.

Price: Approx. RMB100 for two drinks

Who’s going: Large company groups, rich (and old) clubbers, scantily clad women

Good for: Eardrum exploding music, tight security, can art
