Some people enter the restaurant business half-cocked, but Lu Yunzhao planned the opening of Shrimp Banquet for a decade. The Taiwanese businessman finally saw the culmination of his efforts in Sea World this January.
The menu consists of more than 20 prawn dishes. Near the kitchen door sits a small pool of Shrimp Banquet’s quality crustaceans. Once an order gets placed, wait staff pluck several choice specimens from the waters for direct-to-table service.
Standouts include the signature lemon prawns (RMB138) and hot pepper prawns (RMB148). The former arrive large and crispy, covered in a sauce of minced garlic, shallot, red pepper and fresh Taiwanese lemon for a sweet and citrusy dish. The latter are more savory and served in an earthenware cooking pot. A famous dish in Taiwan, the hot pepper prawns are stewed with black peppers for hours, giving them a lovely chili taste.
Friendly wait staff are at the ready to exchange your plate as soon as it begins to become crowded with discarded shells.
Balance out the spice with a fresh passion drink (RMB32), a delightful arrangement of passionfruit and soda water. The signature lemongrass (RMB32 is also a viable option to accompany any dish here and contains fresh lemongrass juice, mint leaves and lemon wedges.
How about a little milk jelly (RMB22) for dessert? Containing matcha powder from Japan, it comes with a side of sweet red beans. Though slightly bitter, it’s also light and tasty.
Shrimp Banquet plays an array of soothing music that is vaguely Indonesian sounding. Decor here is simple, with wooden furniture and overhead caged lamps. The overall ambience seems not only inviting but relaxing as well, borne along by quality dishes and a cheery atmosphere.
