Honey Lake Music Festival, Shenzhen’s first-ever outdoor music festival showcasing local music, will rock the shores of Xiangmei Bei this Saturday.

Ten local bands including Space Folk, the Friendly Cannons, Dragon Turtle, the Evil Deeds and Pokemon Dad will play from 2-10pm on a large outdoor stage.

Meanwhile, 12 DJs will spin inside the yet to be moved into 1979 shopping mall complex. The lineup of Djs includes: Lovetron, Tayta, Dante, Nimbus, Marko and the only Hong Kong-based act: the Paragon Sound System.

“Initially, we wanted to make a profit from it, but now it’s grown into something more than that,” said Shawn Higgins, one of the festival organizers. The idea for the festival was conceived by another festival organizer, Jack Broughton III, after going to an inner-city music festival in London.

“It’s a showcase of what Shenzhen has to offer. We wanted people that had original music, local to Shenzhen to be a part of this,” Higgins said.

The festival will be similar to local outdoor music festivals in the United States and Europe in that local vendors will be participating as well. Bionic brew will serve three beers and one cider while Rose Café will churn out falafel wraps. NYPD, who helped to organize the event, will also sell their pies.

Different art programs happening throughout the day include Kan Kan Movie Club’s silent film screenings of the Koyaanisqatsi along with short films and an interactive graffiti wall with local artist, James Nye tagging onsite. One wall will be for Nye and the other for anyone wanting to try graffiti. Nye will tag custom t-shirts, too. A craft fair with homemade wares for sale will also be happening.

Other activities available are: henna tattoos, a yoga session and a hula hoop jam.

Jesse Warren, another concert organizer got involved wanting to be part of a ‘completely new idea in Shenzhen’ as he put it. Warren, the most experienced event organizer on Honey Lake Music Festival’s production team, has worked in music promotion for the past six years in Shenzhen with the company Fresh.

“You have the big festivals in Longgang, Midi and Strawberry, but there’s never been any true outdoor music festival event with local bands,” Warren said. Tomorrow, that changes.

To go to Honey Lake Music Festival, take the orange line to Xingmei Bei exit D2. Turn left and walk straight for 200-300 meters. The 1979 shopping complex will be there on the left.
