Shocking news hit Shenzhen on Wednesday morning after a residential building collapsed

The building, which is located near the border with Hong Kong in the city’s Luohu district, sank into the ground and collapsed onto its side at around 11.20am, according to Luohu authorities.

Fortunately, no deaths or injuries resulted from the incident. Community workers told China National Radio that the collapsed building, which houses a wet market on its first floor, is empty. They had already evacuated nearby residents prior to its collapse after detecting an abnormal sound from underground. Residents also said they had felt a small tremor in recent days.

On the scene, staff from Southern Weekly reported that neighboring buildings were also damaged as a result of the collapsed building. Gas concentration measurements were conducted by on-site staff members from Shenzhen Gas Corporation following the incident.

An investigation into the building’s collapse is currently underway.

In July, the collapse of a stadium in Shenzhen led to three deaths and left three others injured.

The Guangdong city has recently been touted as a model city for the future, with the State Council planning to shape Shenzhen into a global metropolis. However, one area that clearly needs to be addressed going forward is building safety.
