The great thing about areas like OCT Loft is that every time you visit, there is a new bar, cafe or restaurant to try. Modern and artsy design comes with the territory, but Hu Tao Li takes it to a whole new level.

Open from 11.30am to 2am, the venue is equipped with a generous terrace and inside dining area. It’s a cozy place for a meal but also intimate enough for the cocktail fanatics among you who like a moody ambiance. Made of solid wood with warm shades of brown, the interior is decorated with several contemporary paintings and musical equipment from the 50s.

Owner and musician Guo Xiang conceived of his bar-restaurant as a place for music lovers, by music lovers. As such, a daily roster of different indie artists plays original songs live, ranging from jazz and blues to folk, setting the tune for a comfortable atmosphere.

The kitchen team is bent on bringing genuine Sichuan cuisine to its patrons, like the sesame fish in chili stew (RMB168 – attention, big plate!) which will certainly bring tears to your eyes. If you fear spice, go for the owner’s special fried meat variation (RMB22), a selection of meat sticks which goes down best with either a glass of orange ginger lemon tea (RMB20) or aloe vera tea (RMB20).
