June 15-July 31: Enter the Oriental Cup Calligraphy Contest

All foreigners working or living in Guangdong with a valid visa are eligible to enter the Oriental Cup, a Chinese calligraphy contest for the expat community. Prizes will be given away to top contestants, with the first prize winner getting RMB10,000.

June 22: Japanese Instrumental Band Anoice

Anoice, formed in 2004 by multi-instrumentalists Takahiro Kido, Yuki Murata, Utaka Fujiwara and Tadashi Yoshikawa, have a dreamy and dynamic sound. They caught the attention of Japanese music lovers with their mesmerizing soundtracks for non-existent films. Ranging from small and soft to toweringly grand and vast, their soundscapes will take you away to different worlds.

June 22: Live Standup Comedian Thai Rivera at Rucker Bar

'Put your seatbelts on, it's about to get crazy.' Introduced by fan-favorite comedian Gabriel 'Fluffy' Iglesias as 'amazing' (see above), Thai Rivera is bringing his hilarious stand-up act to Shenzhen this week. Tickets are limited, so make sure you buy in advance or arrive early to get a seat.

June 23: 'My Shenzhen Dream' Chinese-language Contest Finals

The 'My Shenzhen Dream' Chinese-language contest for foreigners is holding its finals this week, and the event is open to all. Come watch contestants perform and compete for top prizes. Entry is free, but do register beforehand by calling either 2393 8351 or 136 3263 8914.

June 23: Classic Movie Soundtrack Concert

Relive your best movie memories with a professional, live rendition of the songs you might not know by name, but already know by heart. Songs from The Pianist, The Godfather and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly will be performed by renowned pianist Gilda Butta, with Luca Pincini on cello. The full program is available online and subject to change.

June 23: BHQP at Pepper Club

Ben Huang, half of BHQP, is a DJ who's played at many an international electronic music party during a career that's spanned over 20 years. Quentin Paquignon is a sax player, composer and producer who forms the other half of the the act. Preview their combined act above, then see it in person this weekend at Pepper.

June 24: George and Dragon 5th Anniversary Celebration

This Saturday, George and Dragon celebrates their fifth anniversary. If you haven't already, take advantage of this chance to try their 'pig in the box' BBQ plus a buffet (RMB68). To celebrate the occasion there'll also be live music, a lucky draw and drink deals, including five jello/tequila shots for just RMB100.

June 24: Indie Band Cosmos People at B10 Live

Like so many musical groups, Cosmos People was first started by a couple of teenagers: keyboardist Xiaoyu and guitarist Akui. Since then, Cosmos People has grown with the addition of a bass player and influences as diverse as funk, disco and jazz. The indie band was nominated for Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards after releasing their third album, Ten Thousand Hours.

June 24: Sexy Salsa Night at The Terrace
