Artjamming first made its appearance in Hong Kong sometime at the beginning of the 00s. The free-form community painting session has taken a while to make its way across the border to Shenzhen, but now The Colour Lab in OCT-Loft is offering the city’s first experience.

“I had artjammed in Shanghai before, and I liked the idea,” says owner Wendy. “I decided to open a painting studio where friends could hang out together and do something fun.”

Bright with light from the large glass windows, the Colour Lab is a cozy spot with a small loft up top and several people sitting at easels, giving it the feel of an artist’s living room.

Brushes and over 20 kinds of paints are organized on shelves along the wall. The studio is about 50 square meters, with spots for 15 people to paint simultaneously. All equipment comes provided upon purchase of the canvas (RMB268/medium, RMB338/large). Additionally, a wet painting carrier is provided upon completion to ensure the protection of patrons’ masterpieces.

Unlike other painting studios in town, there are no professionals to guide painters at the Colour Lab. Creativity is fostered rather than technical skill. However, if you have no clue how to start or feel a little intimidated sitting in front of a blank slate, employees will come over to advise you on how to begin. A simple sketch is a good way to start, and soon customers find themselves adding paint to the outline.

As a weekend alternative to dining, drinking or sports, the Colour Lab is a great option to stretch the mind and create with others.
