Socially responsible and hopefully trendsetting, O My Nails has something we’ve yet to see in Shenzhen salons: a predominately non-toxic polish selection.
Located in Haiyue’s ghost mall, All City, the shop uses mostly Butter London nail lacquer, described as a “3 free” product. Polish with this distinction gets made without formaldehyde, toluene and DBP (dibutyl phthalate) – yes, carcinogens and an embalming agent are typical ingredients in most nail polish. However, with a Butter London Deluxe Manicure (RMB148), patrons can relax knowing they won’t inhale or (for nail biters) ingest them.
Our treatment began with a cup of delicious, fruity pink rosella tea. We followed our manicurist to a row of plush white leather armchairs, separated from one another by delicate rattan screens and fronted by a sheer white curtain, where our nails were filed then soaked in water. Next, our attendant pushed, scraped and trimmed our cuticles before buffing each nail and rubbing vitamin-infused oil into each finger. After the oil set in, our hands received a mini massage with wildflower and chamomile-scented lotion.
With our hands feeling refreshed, the manicurist applied a nude base coat, then our chosen indigo color. After the top coat, the attendant placed our hands under a dryer then laid a large cotton blanket over our legs, literally tucking us in. With our glass teacup refilled, we waited for our nails to dry while admiring the nearly 30 pictures of the British royal family on the wall.
Quiet, comfortable and private, O My Nails delivers a needed twist on an ancient beauty practice.
