Fake alcohol definitely does exist in China and is really pervasive. I believe you are familiar with the Shanghai bar situation and what you said may be true for those bars you saw. But if there is no guarantee on much of the alcohol then that is effectively the same as it being fake. I am a fan of single malt Scotch whisky living in Beijing and know what the real thing tastes like. But I have never tasted a real whisky in China, all tastes like vodka mixed with food colouring , or cheap whiskies mixed together with a heavy undertone of just raw alcohol.
