For its 10th anniversary, the JZ Festival has gone all-out with a stellar line-up over four stages, including icons – Bootsy Collins, Cui Jian – and stars-in-the-making – Snarky Puppy, Nova Heart. Marcus Miller

Bootsy Collins and the Funk Unity Band

The world’s funkiest bassist laced classic James Brown tracks like ‘Sex Machine’ with elastic basslines before co-piloting Parliament-Funkadelic’s Mothership with George Clinton. He opened up his Funk University in 2010 and will tear the roof off the mother-sucker with two sets at this year’s festival.

Snarky Puppy

The Texan collective rolls nearly 40-members deep and have backed up everyone from Erykah Badu to Justin Timberlake to Snoop Dogg. They picked up a Grammy Award for Best R&B performance this year and their live show is renowned as one of the best today.

The Soul Rebels

Described by the Village Voice as “the missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong,” this eight-piece band counts Metallica, Jay Z, Stella McCartney, Seth Rogen and The Roots as fans. Their show gives everything from hip hop to soul to rock a New Orleans brass band makeover.

Sandy Lam

It’s a homecoming of sorts for the pop superstar whose parents were migrants from Shanghai. In a brilliant near 30-year-career, she’s experimented with R&B and jazz, breaking all the rules of Asian pop. She’s still going strong, winning four trophies at last year’s Golden Melody Awards.

Acid Live

The Beijing multi-ethnic collective celebrated five years of peddling a unique sound mixes jazz, funk and electronic music last month. The group is anchored by its core quintet that includes DJ Shiva on the decks and the wondrous sounds of keyboardist Zhang Zhang.
