For its 10th anniversary, the JZ Festival has gone all-out with a stellar line-up over four stages, including icons – Bootsy Collins, Cui Jian – and stars-in-the-making – Snarky Puppy, Nova Heart. Here are some of our can’t miss picks for day one of the festival: October 18. (Click here for the day two line-up.)

Bootsy Collins and the Funk Unity Band

The world’s funkiest bassist laced classic James Brown tracks like ‘Sex Machine’ with elastic basslines before co-piloting Parliament-Funkadelic’s Mothership with George Clinton. He opened up his Funk University in 2010 and will tear the roof off the mother-sucker with two sets at this year’s festival.
// Oct 18, Green Note Stage, 8-9.30pm.
// Oct 19, Green Note Stage, 6.30-8pm.

Cui Jian

No VPN? Listen to Cui Jian at Xiami.

Best known as the Godfather of Chinese rock and roll, with his historic ‘Nothing to My Name’, Cui continues to push musical boundaries. He’s teaming up with Zhang Lin, the Mainland’s foremost bad ass blues-rock bassist, for this show that embraces the romantic feeling of jazz.
// Oct 18, Green Note Stage 6-7,30pm.

Jojo Mayer & Nerve

No VPN? Listen on Xiami.

The Swiss drummer received his first drum set as a two-year-old and has been on-beat ever since. He performed with legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone, before embarking on a sonic journey mixing jazz with electronic flourishes. His Prohibited Beatz parties in the 1990s were legendary, leading to the formation of Nerve. Dubbed “the best real live electronic band in the world,” the quartet has won praise from DJ Shadow and Amon Tobin. They’re a live marvel, with Mayer wowing crowds with his ability to perform drum ‘n’ bass’ frenetic rhythms on an acoustic drum kit.
// Oct 18, Master Hall, 4.30-5.30pm.

Nova Heart

Since forming in 2011, this Beijing electro-rock group has turned heads around the globe with their evil disco sounds. Led by Helen Feng, who's been called the "Queen of Beijing Rock," they've become festival favorites due to their ferocious live show. Catch them before their life changes when they release their highly anticipated debut album this December.
// Oct 18, Earth Lounge, 7-8pm.

Jazzanova Live w/Paul Randolph
