Shanghai police are desparately searching for a foreign man who reportedly assaulted a taxi passenger at a traffic intersection on Wednesday night, leaving him in need of hospital treatment, CNS reports.

The passenger, surnamed Zhang, said a foreigner in his 20s stopped his bike at traffic lights on the Wuding and Jiangsu roads intersection and started attacking him.

Zhang said he was unable to fight back due to his sitting position inside the taxi. He left the incident with a fractured nose and broken suborbital ridge, a bony area just above the eye socket.

According to the taxi's driver, surnamed Fu, his passenger entered the taxi at around 11pm on Wanhangdu Road. It was when they were turning into Wuding Road W. when the cyclist nearly caused an accident on the other side of the street.

Fu said the foreigner then pointed his finger at the taxi several times, but the driver dismissed the threats and continued driving. It was then that the man began following the taxi, before launching his attack on Zhang.

Although Fu tried to chase the foreigner, he apparently took off on his bike and rode down the street.

Authorities say they are investigating the incident and are trying to establish the identity of the foreign attacker. Zhang was taken to Jing'an District Central Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
