As we reported earlier, both Charmant and Madison Kitchen at the corner of Huaihai and Fuxing Lu will be closing their doors soon, and both have plans to reopen elsewhere in the near future.
August 31 will be the last day of operation for Charmant, which has been serving traditional Taiwanese dishes, snacks and desserts like peanut smoothies, luroufan, oyster pancake and ‘three cups chicken’ to Shanghai's Taiwanese cohort and late night diners of all backgrounds for the past 14 years.
Loyal customers have been flocking to the restaurant during the final weeks to sneak in their last meals and leaving signatures on a giant farewell message board at the door. They’ve also been asked to share their favorite memories of the restaurant for a special goodbye video. (You can send your memories to their official WeChat account — simply search for 小城故事Charmant and send your photos, videos or stories).
Many of Charmant's regulars would know that the restaurant is owned by Eddie Peng’s mom, the Taiwan-born actor's fans have also been sharing on Weibo their food photos and selfies taken at the restaurant with the hashtag #上海•小城故事# (Charmant Shanghai) and tagging Peng’s account on their posts.
The actor himself also posted a message on August 5 thanking his mom and the restaurant’s staff for their hard work, saying he had many great memories at the restaurant over the past 14 years. He concludes by writing, “I was raised by Charmant. I love you, mom. The end is just a new beginning.”
On the other hand, Chef Austin Hu says Madison Kitchen will leave its current home by mid-September.
