People who illegally drive after drinking are sometimes able to pass the breath alcohol detector by not blowing into the device, but this is about to change.
A new breathalyzer is coming to Shanghai which will quite literally blow the whistle on those with 'beer' breath.
The breathalyzer is similar to the old device except it will have a whistle attached to the mouthpiece. When the driver is taking the test, police will be able to hear if they are properly blowing into it.
A traffic police officer in the Jinshan District created the model and the device has proven to work well in recent trials.
On Tuesday night in Jinshan District, drivers were tested on the existing and newest breathalyzer. At least three of the people who had passed the first alcohol detector failed the new test. According to police, one of the drivers that only passed the old breathalyzer smelled clearly of alcohol.
Another person who only failed the new the new alcohol detector blew a reading of 85 milligrams per 100 millimeters, which is over four times the legal limit of 20 miligrams per 100 millimeters. This new device will be introduced into other districts next year.
