Cameras Now Monitoring Drivers At Shanghai Airports

Uber and Didi drivers beware, if you stall longer than six minutes at either of Shanghai's airports, you could be fined RMB200.

As of today smart police cameras will be in place to identify and fine drivers who park for too long at the departure level of both Hongqiao and Pudong airports.

The cameras are meant to alleviate traffic pressure as well as target drivers who park cars in order to pick up tourists. According to Huang Zheren, a spokesman for Shanghai Airport Police, the clock begins counting as soon as a car pulls in and stops. Once the camera has captured the plate number, the ticker begins, recording a 'suspected offense' after the six-minute mark. After an offense is confirmed, the driver will receive their notice one week later.

Signs will be in place to remind drivers about the cameras and those driving disabled passengers should take note: you can still be fined. If unloading passengers could take longer than the time allotment, it's recommended drivers avoid the penalty by driving passengers to a parking lot.

The crackdown on car parkers has been in place since April with violators receiving not only a RMB200 fine, but also three demerits on their licenses. The new cameras are basically just the cherry on top. Yum.
