Restaurants

Pelikan

"Nordic casual dining" is taken to new heights with local and seasonal ingredients used in innovative ways to create simple and fresh flavor combinations on a plate. Head chef Kasper Pedersen, hailing fresh off the boat from Denmark, is not half bad to look at, either.

Total Verdict: 4/5
Price: RMB250-300 per person
Who's going: office workers or residents nearby, cool kids before a night-out, girls (or boys) who like hot chefs
Good for: casual lunch or dinner, small group dinners, dates

Ramen Nagi

A new addition to K11's 'food court,' this is one of the only ramen joints we've found 'round these parts that offers thick noodles in addition to the more common thin variety. While they do charge extra for additions that should be a given (mushrooms and the odd boiled egg), bowls start at RMB60, not bad for a solid ramen option.

Total Verdict: 3.5/5
Price: bowls from RMB60
Who’s going: mainly locals, the odd Japanese expat
Good for: ramen, lunch, casual dining

Bowl'd

Someone finally acted on the million dollar idea of bringing acai smoothie bowls to Shanghai. Bowls are tasty and refreshing, made with organic ingredients and are free from animal derivatives or added sugar. Other healthy items on the menu are salads, juices and housemade nut milks (almond, cashew and hazelnut).

Urban Diner

Gourmet fast food has its day at this Americana inspired simply designed that's just recently opened directly opposite the enormous ferris wheel on the rooftop of Joy City Mall. While the food isn't fancy it is done well and might give American expats some flashbacks of home.

Total Verdict: 3.5/5
Price: RMB 100-150 per person
Who’s going: locals and expats
Good for: American food, burgers, brunch, families, dates

Madison Kitchen

An aptly named eatery (it only seats six) this is exactly what we needed when we woke up hungover this morning. The sandwiches are hearty and rare finds in Shanghai. We're talking about you, roast beef with horseradish! And those cookies...there are times when words simply aren't enough.

Total Verdict: 4.5/5
Price: RMB50-60 per sandwich
Who's going: locals and expats, the very hungry and/or hungover
Good for: big appetites, sandwiches, takeout, snacks, cookies, coffee, salad

Bars

XO Wine Bar

XO Wine Bar has a simple premise so we'll keep our comments on it simple: an impressive selection of wines, available by the glass or bottle, for really reasonable prices. An excellent value and pleasant atmosphere to boot.

Price: wine by the glass from RMB25
Who's going: locals and expats
Good for: wine, casual drinking, good value, al fresco, dates, small-medium groups
