1. Luo Dan: When to Leave
m97 opens up its new Changping Lu space with a solo exhibition from the Chengdu-born artist. When to Leave utilizes a wet-plate collodion photographic process showcasing striking landscapes of Western China.

2. Ren Zhitan: Insight & Mind
Art Labor hosts the Beijing based abstract artist known for working with unconventional materials. Inside & Mind features Ren’s recent work on marble and rice paper.

3. Youn Myeung-Ro: Plateau
The Hengshan Feng gallery hosts the Shanghai stop of celebrated Korean contemporary artist Youn Myeung-Ro’s China tour. Since dabbling with abstractions in the 1960s, Youn has chased his own artistic muse, working with tortoise shells in the 1970s to explore the ontological nature of painting, working with minimal pencil drawing and paper in the 1980s, and using acrylics and oxidized powders on linen canvas this millennium.

4. Xuzhen Supermarket
Since its initial launch in 2007, this critically acclaimed art project from Shanghai bad boy artist Xu Zhen has wowed crowds around the world. Seeminly a typical Chinese convenience store, XuZhen Supermarket sets up shop on Yuyuan Lu. However, while products are on sale, there’s actually no content at all, accentuating the point of emptiness of commercialism.

5. Chen Nong: A Play in a Play
OFOTO hosts the latest works by Beijing based artist Chen Nong. Known for his dramatic works that double as visual feasts. This latest series features 16 works inspired by the stories and myths of the Silk Road like Han Dynasty diplomat Zhang Qian’s journey to the West, Qin Shi Huangdi burning books and burying scholars alive and the travels of Tang Dynasty princess Wencheng to marry Tibetan patriarch SongtsenGampo.

6. Herman Chong: Ifs, Ands or Buts
Rockbund Art Museum kicks off 2016 with a solo exhibition of acclaimed Singaporean artist Heman Chog. Seven new works will be displayed including two that were commissioned specifically for the Rockbund Art Museum - ‘Legal Bookshop (Shanghai) - a displaced gift shop with a bookshop stocked with books selected by award-winning author Ken Liu (who also translated Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award winner Three Body Problem). Expect a wide range of works ranging from video installations to monumental sculptures.
