Writing on the body is as old as time. Yet, perhaps because it was adopted by popular culture first, it hasn’t been classed as art. This is as true for the West – where just about any 18th or 19th century sailor got inked – as it is for the East. Both sides of the ocean, lower orders were the first ones to get tattoos, giving the whole culture around it a plebeian, even criminal reputation.

Well, times have changed. Now, just about everyone we know has a tattoo. Body art has become mainstream – and that’s beginning to be the case in China too.

So this month, we’ve talked to some of Shanghai’s most sought-after, creative tattoo artists, and dug into the local tattoo scene. Read what they have to say about it all on page 60.

In honor of this issue, we handed the cover over to tattooist Shang Qing (pictured right), who ‘tattooed’ none other than our Events Editor Zoey Zha for it. Big thanks to him for his artistry.

Elsewhere in the magazine, Andrew Chin gives you the skinny on Shanghai’s International Literary Festival (page 14), taking over M on the Bund from October 31 to November 8. Lots of talks, poetry events and authors hitting town this month – check out our calendar and get your tickets now.

In Life&Style, I do a post-Shanghai Fashion Week roundup of Chinese designers to watch (page 32). The fashion bonanza meant real business this year, and some of the creatives that showed during the week are well worth raving about.

For Arts, Mr. Chin and Zoey Zha cover the ‘Essential Facts’ you should know about Taylor Swift (page 50 – she’s playing November 10-12 in case you didn’t know), lots of very good theater (page 52 and 53) and two Dalí exhibitions coming to town (page 56).

Food & Drink Editor Betty Richardson has kept our eyes busy in her section too, with the usual slate of on-point restaurant and bar reviews, plus a mouthwatering feature on Shanghai’s best sarnies (page 72). Real. Food. Porn.

Finally, don’t forget to turn to page 90, in our Community Section, to learn all about our sister magazine Urban Family's upcoming event, the Young Achievers Awards, which happens at the end of the month.

Until next time,

Marianna Cerini
