Recognize the name Lollipop Bakery? You might've heard it from the Pantry, where founder Lexie Morris first incubated her cupcake business after moving down from Beijing.
With Lollipop having gone from strength to strength since then, this bright sunshine yellow cafe on the busy intersection of Wulumuqi Lu marks the first stand alone shop for the bakery.
It's pretty tiny inside with just a few tables and chairs, but there's a menu of robust sandwiches served on doorstep-thick slices of farmhouse and granary bread, including retro Brit favorite coronation chicken (that's curry chicken with raisins, by the way). They also have daily salads from RMB25-50. Add an extra RMB30 and get coffee and a cookie too.
Lollipop's famous for its cupcakes, so naturally there's a good selection here on display ranging from RMB12-25 each, available fresh from the oven at 11am daily. Other cakey offerings include muffins, cinnamon rolls, cake, cheesecake and the like. There's no set menu, but they usually have a pretty good selection.
Lollipop's cupcakes tend to be on the lighter, spongier side than others we've tried, with a large dollop of whipped, almost fluffy buttercream icing on top. They're quite indulgent, but not so much so that you can't eat anything for the subsequent 4 hours.
As you might expect, there's a full coffee (from RMB18-24) and tea menu, including an intriguing-sounding popcorn flavor tea (from RMB25), and they're open for breakfast at 7am on weekdays (8am weekends). Makes a nice change of pace from the usual Xingbake, no?
