Thought Yongkang Lu couldn’t fit any more bars? Think again. There’s a new one on the strip, and he’s a bearded bear selling German beers on tap.
Manned by bearded American expat Foster (who used to work next door at Dean’s Bottle Shop) the beer comes directly from German-owned microbrewery Zapfler. Long story short, Foster partners up with the brewery, he mans the Yongkang Lu shop and they send a fresh batch down whenever he runs out.
Before you go thinking this is some trendy, meet-your-next-girlfriend hipster hangout, Bearded Bear is über minimalist inside. There are no tables or chairs to speak of, simply stools and a ledge on which to place your pint. Don’t expect fancy pants cocktails either; non-beer offerings are either spirits with house pours or a sinister looking black Sambuca (RMB25).
Beers, on the other hand (all RMB40/pint), are lush in both variety and flavor. Our favorite was the crisp and citrusy Pilsner, but the smoked lager and Bearded Bear IPA were also delicious. Sadly, they’d run out of the honey lager on our visit, so we’re saving it for next time. Come here the next time you need a chilled pint minus the bullshit.
Price: RMB40 per pint
Who’s going: Mixed bunch of Yongkang Lu revelers
Good for: Beer, good value
