UPDATE: 7 Dead After Mercedes Benz Dealership Collapses in Shanghai

UPDATE #2 (Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 7.21pm CST): Local media are now reporting that 21 people were pulled from the debris, seven of whom are confirmed dead. Fourteen people are in stable condition. Meanwhile, two people remain trapped.

UPDATE #1 (Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 7.09pm CST): 19 people were pulled from rubble after a building collapsed on Zhaohua Lu in Changning district. 

A Mercedes Benz 4S dealership on Zhaohua Lu, Changning district collapsed on Thursday morning at around 11.30am, trapping more than 20 people in a mound of rubble, according to Xinhua News. Reports from Henan Radio and Television News Center state that 17 people have been pulled from the building’s ruins so far, although rescue efforts are still underway as of press time. 

The building was under reconstruction at the time of collapse.

Twenty-four fire engines and over 150 firefighters have been dispatched to carry out rescue work, while ambulances are also on standby at the scene. According to Xinmin Evening News, at least six people have been taken to Huadong Hospital for treatment, while another two people were brought to Huashan Hospital, with at least one person suffering from brain trauma. 

Vehicles nearby the collapsed building were said to be covered in dust, while rescue workers carried out evacuations of buildings in the vicinity of the 4S dealership.
