Um, we thought China’s sharing economy was getting a little out of control when we heard that cat-sharing might actually become a thing. But things have taken a turn toward the ultra-bizarre in Beijing. It appears that shared sex dolls are really a thing here – or at least they were for four days, before the company was forced to cease operations.
Let us explain:
A sex toy company called Touch launched their shared sex doll business in the capital on Thursday. At first they had 10 sex dolls available for either daily or long-term rental. The dolls cost RMB298 per day and customers could choose from five different models, including Chinese, Korean, Russian, Greek and one Wonder Woman doll (and yes, she had a sword and shield).
Suffice it to say, the company quickly garnered a lot of attention.
The company claims to have received a number of requests during the first two days of operation, a Touch spokesperson told the BBC. However, most people were scandalized and outraged about the business and they weren’t shy about speaking out.
By day four, the company was forced to shut down its sex doll sharing business. In a statement on Weibo, Touch "sincerely apologized for the negative impact" of its shared sex dolls saying that sex is "not vulgar” and that they will continue to promote a "healthier and more harmonious sex lifestyle" through their other products.
The company continues to sell (not rent) sex toys, including sex dolls.
