The officers who handled the now infamous Lei Yang case are now being formally investigated by Beijing police, South China Morning Post reports. In a short statement, the Beijing public security bureau announced that the officers involved in the case will be thoroughly investigated.

Lei, 29, died mysteriously while in police custody on May 7. According to police, Lei was arrested for allegedly soliciting a prostitute. He was detained by officers after leaving a foot massage parlor around 9pm on May 7 and died in the hospital less than two hours later.

Because of the mysterious circumstances surrounding Lei’s death, his case has received a lot of attention from the public, and many are speculating that this might be a case of police brutality. The inconsistencies between the officers’ statements and the lack of an explanation about how Lei died have raised suspicions.

Lei, who graduated with a master’s degree from Renmin University in 2009, has received a lot of support from his former classmates. A group of alumni launched an online petition on May 12 in order to demand an investigation. His family (his wife is pictured above) also filed a formal complaint with the municipal prosecution’s office on Tuesday, alleging police misconduct and abuse.

It appears these efforts are paying off.
