Last week, two Dutch men attacked Chinese tourists on the streets of Amsterdam with milk powder. Intended as a prank, the men ran up behind Chinese men and emptied a box of milk powder on them, after initially asking if they wanted to buy milk powder. The attacks were filmed and subsequently posted on Facebook.
The prankster approached the Chinese man from behind and threw baby powder on him.
An unusual choice of weapon, the milk powder was apparently in reference to a spike in the number of Chinese parents stocking up on baby formula from other countries, such as the Netherlands. Last November, a video went viral on Chinese social media sites of two Chinese men arguing over a box of baby formula in front of a Dutch supermarket.
In response, Chinese netizens expressed their anger and condemnation for the prank video. One individual stated that the Dutch economy would be nothing without the Chinese and that they should be thankful. Another stated that the prank was a waste of milk powder.
The pair of pranksters ultimately apologized publicly on Facebook, stating that they did not intend to attack Chinese people specifically, but their video was merely meant to be a prank.
Chinese purchases of baby formula have increased in foreign countries following a high number of melamine poisoning cases being reported in Chinese mainland Since 2008, Chinese parents have looked to buy baby formula in foreign countries and ship them to China. According to What’s On Weibo, some Chinese families are willing to pay as much as USD75 for one tin of baby formula.
