On May 23, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission released the official Beijing Study Guide for International Students (BSGIS) – putting together all the most essential and practical information for international students studying in Beijing in one place.

Beijing is the top city in China for students studying abroad, with 92 universities and institutes to choose from, as well as over 3,000 years of history to be immersed in.

The goal of the new guide is to offer a practical, accessible, and user-friendly reference manual to boost the overall experience for foreign nationals studying in the capital.

With the added convenience of this integrated pamphlet, the Chinese government hopes to draw in more students from around the world.

The guide is available in both physical and digital form in 10 languages:

  • Chinese

  • English

  • Korean

  • Japanese

  • German

  • French

  • Russian

  • Spanish

  • Arabic

  • Portuguese

The first section of the BSGIS covers how to choose universities and majors.

The next section lists the general price range for different degrees and information on how to access scholarship programs.

The guide then goes over the application materials required, how to prepare them, and the general deadlines for enrollment.

It also details the type of visas required for short and long-term studies in China and how to apply for them.

One of the most helpful portions is the ‘Integrating into Life in Beijing’ section, which includes information on how to get a Chinese SIM card, bank card, complete the accommodation registration, set up mobile payment apps, and apply for part-time work.

The guide even provides suggestions for what to pack based on the time of year students will be in Beijing – yes, it really has everything covered!

The final section covers internship requirements and the work permit application process.

It may have a few typos here and there, but overall the BSGIS is a great resource for both incoming and existing students from abroad.
