The wait is finally over for burger lovin’ Beijingers! After shaking up the burger scene in Shanghai last year, the famed New York gourmet fast-food joint Shake Shack officially opened its doors in the capital on August 12.
Set in the vibrant Taikoo Li shopping center in the heart of Sanlitun, Shake Shack is a prime spot to grab a satisfying bite while you’re out and about. The sleek interior takes inspiration from the traditional courtyard homes of the city’s hutong, with more contemporary fixtures and greenery accenting the bright and open space. The restaurant also spotlights life in the hutong with two colorful art pieces designed by local artist YoungYu.
To celebrate the grand opening of its trendy new digs, Shake Shack organized ‘The Show is On,’ a series of exciting Peking Opera-themed events filled with games, prizes and contemporary performances, like rap-infused traditional opera and street dancers busting Taiji moves.
Alongside its typical menu offerings, Shake Shack also debuted some Beijing-inspired desserts to showcase the local flavors of the city. Get a sweet sip of tanghulu with the signature Hutong Hawthorn shake, made with frozen vanilla custard and tart hawthorn berries. Have your phone handy to capture the beauty of the Beijing Blush Concrete, a perfect cup of vanilla custard whipped with Dao Xiang Cun rose pastry, raspberry jam and fresh raspberries, delicately topped with rose petals. The Taikoo Lizi Concrete is an ode to northern China’s roasted chestnut street treats – vanilla custard with roasted chestnuts, buttery shortbread and a drizzle of miso-chestnut caramel sauce. The cherry (er, chestnut) on top? Living up to Shake Shack’s company mission to ‘Stand for Something Good,’ the Sanlitun location teamed up with local charity Smile Angel Foundation to donate 5% of sales from its Taikoo Lizi to help the cause.

For those looking for familiar favorites, eat your heart out with signature classics like the ShackBurger, made with all-natural Angus beef, alternative picks such as the Flat-Top Dogs and Chick’n Shack chicken sandwiches, and vegan-friendly options like the ‘Shroom Burger, featuring crisp-fried Portobello mushrooms. Pair your ideal burger and crinkle-cut fries with a frosty pint of ShackMeister Ale, courtesy of Brooklyn Brewery. Looking to wine down for the afternoon? Shack Red and Shack White wines are also on offer.
Whether you want a quick fix while shopping with family or to grab dinner with friends before a night out, Shake Shack is there to satisfy your burger craving at any hour of the day (well, 11am-10pm).
