High-End Patisserie Chikalicious Opens in Beijing

Whether you’re looking for new #Instafood material to tease your followers with or just the latest hip spot to drink away the summer’s ennui, you are in luck. After first opening in Shanghai, Chikalicious, the high-end patisserie from New York, has landed in the Beijing CBD.

You can discern a lot about a place from its clientele. Forget ladies who lunch – Chikalicious patrons are well-heeled young women and Weibo influencers. They aren’t here for an afternoon tea so much as an afternoon… Champagne. Phones in hand, they don’t miss a shot – and that’s because everything inside Chikalicious is designed to be share-worthy: the hip pastel interiors, the highly ’grammable view of the CBD and, most of all, the eye-catching desserts.

Chikalicious is a ‘dessert bar’ from NYC with locations throughout the world (the Shanghai branch opened in 2016). You won’t find main courses or sandwiches here, but rather a selection of wines and cakes.

The ‘bar’ became famous in other cities for its sweets-only three-course menu, and while (at the time of writing) this exact formulation has yet to debut in Beijing, many of the same desserts are available here.

They are are both tasty and creative, if expensive (RMB88 per slice of cake, RMB48 per ‘puff’). With a creamy core and crispy choux pastry exterior, the black sesame puff does not disappoint. We also enjoy the raspberry-topped Earl Grey cake and a chocolate-coffee-hazelnut-dulce de leche special. The wine list features imports from France, Italy and Spain, and the bubbly Freixenet Brut Rosé (RMB88 per glass) complements our sugar rush perfectly.

As it turns out, you don’t have to be an ‘influencer’ to enjoy Chikalicious. You only need to have a sweet tooth (and perhaps some cash).
