The Franco Files: TiensTiens Opens in Qianmen

Déjà vu? Not really: TiensTiens just opened a new branch in Qianmen, inside the design-forward Beijing Fun complex – and it’s as French as ever.

The pastry shop, winner of our 2017 ‘Bakery of the Year’ award, is known as one of Sanlitun’s best spots to brunch in style. And now, the cafe looks set to become one of Xicheng’s hottest spots (yes, the entire district, because lets be real, it’s slim pickings out there).

Located a short walk from Tiananmen Square, the spacious boutique-cum-patisserie is an ode to minimalism. Inside we see pale-colored wood and hear the crooning of Edith Piaf – we mentioned it’s French, right? Blindingly white, it looks like an art gallery that the owners decided to fill with edible masterpieces. The prices? Pas pour tous but hey, it’s a good place to impress a date, and the treats are the real deal.

We try a religieuse au chocolat (RMB58), a rich flavor bomb covered in a delicious ganache, and the macarons (RMB90 for five) do not disappoint either. A standout? It’s hard to pick just one but the Commissaire à la cannelle (RMB10), a rice pudding that hides a vanilla surprise, is right up there.

Balance the sweetness with a coffee – or pick a glass from the carefully curated selection of French wines. And if your sophisticated self simply must know more, you can find a detailed description and the history of each treat on the shop’s WeChat page. Très chic.
