The annual CCTV Spring Festival Gala, otherwise called Chunwan (春晚), is one of the biggest televised events of the year in the Middle Kingdom.

Said to be the most watched television program in the world — surpassing even the Super Bowl — Chunwan each year boasts the largest audience of any live entertainment show. In 2016, the program was reportedly broadcast to over 900 million people.

Airing each year on Chinese New Year's Eve, the gala features performances by the country's most famous celebrities, as well as up-and-coming stars. The event has become a holiday tradition for many, who tune in each year to watch the variety show with their families. Performers who make appearances in the gala go on to become household names in China (if they aren't already).

Recent shows have featured Celine Dion, Coco Lee, the TFBoys (China's superstar boyband) and hundreds of dancing robots.
