Popular Chinese Grocery App Launches English Version

If you are anything like us, grocery shopping can be a boring and inconvenient undertaking. For starters, you have to put on pants, and then, if you’re not fortunate enough to live near a supermarket, you have to brave public transit or crooked taxi drivers to acquire your desired home cooking or cleaning products.

Today, we are happy to announce that stocking up on condoms, 500-milliliter bottles of Ballantine’s whiskey and boneless chicken breasts just got easier (read: lazier) with the launch of YiHaoDian’s English app.

One of the largest online grocery stores in China, YiHaoDian has an estimated 1 million products available for purchase, although only about 10 percent of them are currently available on the company’s English app. But hey, that’s still 100,000 items (which is pretty good if you ask us).

After toying around with the app a bit, we can report that it’s intuitively laid out and that prices are extremely reasonable (delivery is free for orders over RMB68). Payment can be completed via Alipay, WeChat Pay and Union Pay cards, in addition to credit or cash on delivery.

Unfortunately for those in Beijing and the Pearl River Delta, the expat version of the platform is currently only available in Shanghai, although those who can read and write Chinese can use the Chinese version of the app, which is available nationwide (search ‘1号店’ in the Apple Store or their preferred Android app store).

Fingers crossed the English version of YiHaoDian will launch soon in other first-tier cities, but in the meantime, Shanghai expats can start mobile shopping by downloading ‘YHD Expats.’
