In our new series Getting Moderately Deep With... we ask a food vendor tough questions. Well, sort-of tough. This month we meet Ma Bangxiao, the straight-talking Gansu native pulling Lanzhou lamian. Ma’s story proves one thing: Just because you’re a family man doesn’t mean you don’t lie to your wife.
How are you feeling today?
Great!
What is the first thing you thought when you woke up this morning?
How my work is going to be today.
What is your idea of a perfect day?
When business is good and I have no cause to be angry.
What is the most surprising thing that has ever happened in your life?
Getting a bonus last year.
Who is your best customer?
Pretty much everyone who buys food here is a good customer.
Who are the worst customers?
I have those too, but very few of them. The worst customers are picky eaters.
If you could change one thing about your life, what would you change?
I would change the lifestyle of my family. I would earn more money so my family could live better.
What makes you laugh?
I’m always laughing! I’m in the service industry because I like to smile at people and laugh with them.
What is your biggest accomplishment?
My family.
What is your most prized possession?
My family members.
Which living person do you most admire?
My parents.
Who is your hero?
My father.
So, you’re a family man! What do you like the least in a person?
Dishonesty.
When was the last time you lied?
Yesterday or the day before yesterday, who knows? I went out to drink but I told my wife I was working.
What is your personal motto?
Live every day well.
When are you happiest?
When I’m at home.
What is your greatest fear?
I don’t really have any big fears.
Who is the person you love the most?
My wife.
If you didn’t make lamian, what would you do for work?
I’ve never thought about it before. I love doing what I do.
