Gareth Emery on Loving Life as a Top DJ

When it comes to his career, Gareth Emery has achieved a lot. He's performed all around the world and regularly headlines the main stages of Ultra, EDC, Tomorrowland, ASOT, Coachella, and much more. The UK native is also a two-time World Top 10 and four-time World Top 15 DJ. Emery recently released his latest album, 100 Reasons to Live. As he puts it, the album is all about "loving and appreciating life."

As he preps for his big Beijing performance at Spark on Friday, Emery took some time to answer a few of our questions. As someone who has experienced such success Emery is about as humble and grateful as it gets. If it isn’t obvious by the title of his new album, there's no doubt that he is loving life as a DJ.

I see you have a pretty eclectic background in music. What turned you onto EDM?
I played classical piano as a kid, I was in a punk rock band as a teenager and then began producing electronic music in my 20s. In all honesty I think it was because all I needed was a laptop, so even if I was on a family holiday in France I could be working!

What were you doing before you became a professional DJ?
I was working as a junior website developer in Southampton.

What was the music scene like when you were growing up in England?
My first-ever gig was at Godskitchen in Birmingham. Dance music was huge in the underground and clubbing scenes, and I used to go out as a clubber... There is a picture of me in full-on cyber somewhere!

Who are you biggest personal and professional influences?
Personally I would say my family, who have always encouraged me no matter what. In particular my sister who is now also my manager! Professionally... I have worked with so many wonderful people over the years, but in all honesty never felt like I had a mentor. I am starting a new project, which is a podcast, where I will mentor upcoming producers/DJs as I really want people to learn from my mistakes.

How would you describe your style?
It's just music I like. I'm done describing it! All I hope is that you like it as well.

How do you think your music resonates with different cultures around the world?
The global positivity and recognition I receive is phenomenal. It's mind blowing to create something in your room or studio and have it listened to, and hopefully enjoyed, by so many people! It is really very humbling.

How does it feel to be so successful? Is it challenging or is it just amazing?
I wouldn't describe myself this way, but thank you for the kind words! I feel I have much more to achieve and to push myself to do. I love what I do. It is both challenging and amazing in equal part.

What did you enjoy about your previous visits to China?
The culture and people are so wonderful! I have never felt so at home somewhere so different to home! I cannot wait to bring my family here.

What about your upcoming show in Beijing are you most excited for?
The wonderful and welcoming crowds. Always so mind blowing and humbling.

I see you got involved in the podcast game early on. What made you get into it?
I was a bit nerdy when I was younger (hence the web programming!) and really liked the whole podcast movement.

You are pretty big on social media. Are you a fan of social media?
I can talk directly to fans now! Answering their questions, lovely comments and also concerns. They are my biggest supporters and also my biggest critics. No opinion means more than theirs. They are the reason I am where I am, and I am forever grateful!

What does a typical work week look like for you?
It changes every single week! But as an example... Most days will be on the studio, wolfing on new music and remixes. I will spend a lot of time with management as well working on high level strategy. Aside from that family is my number one priority, and I spend as much time as I can with my wife Kat and daughter Sansa.

What are your biggest accomplishments in your life thus far?
Exactly where I am today. Doing what I love for a job and having a wonderful family. I only hope I can be an inspiration and help to others, and it is something I am very passionate about.

Describe your new album for us.
100 Reasons To Live is about loving and appreciating life. During the two years writing it I changed a lot personally. I became a lot more positive and grateful, and I hope that reflects on the record.
