July 18-22: Polish Food Week
For one week and one week only, Feast is hosting a Polish Food Week. Thanks to trainee Paulina Lukaszewska, they'll be serving up traditional Polish dishes until Friday. If you have no idea what Polish food actually is, a few dishes that will be served are Placek Ziemniaczany z Duszonymi Grzybami (potato pancakes with stewed mushroom), Pstrag w Smietanie (seared trout with cream and served with baby potatoes and haricot verts), and Kaczka z Jablkami (roasted duck with apples, served with caramelized apples and roast potatoes).
Mon-Fri July 18-22. 2-course (RMB128) or 3-course (RMB158) lunch including buffet-style starters and desserts from the Food Market; 2-course dinner menu for RMB188 inclusive of a shot of Zubroska vodka with apple juice. Feast, see event listing.
July 19: Koryo Tours Presents 'The Game of Their Lives'
Something unexpected happened during the 1966 FIFA World Cup. The North Korea national football team shocked the world when they beat tournament favorite Italy and became the first Asian team to ever reach the quarter finals. Then they returned to North Korea and vanished from the spotlight. Nearly 40 years after the match, two English filmmakers ventured to Pyongyang in search of members of the North Korean team. Their award-winning documentary film The Game of Their Lives tells the story of how the underdogs managed to surprise the world and offers a rare glimpse into life in North Korea. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the remarkable match, Koryo Tours is hosting a screening of the documentary at The Bookworm on Tuesday (July 19).

Jul 21-24: The Jungle Book
Rudyard Kipling’s tale of Mowgli, a boy raised in the wild by (mostly) lovable animals has been a children’s classic since its release 120 years ago. But if Hollywood’s recent live action film adaptation of The Jungle Book isn’t for you, the Chapterhouse Theatre’s version might still be. Since its premiere three years ago, The Jungle Book has toured the UK and Ireland twice. Ben Darlington returns as Mowgli, a role he starred in during the show’s inaugural run. Other Chapterhouse veterans Bryony Tebbutt, Hannah Douglas, Gareth Cary and Louise Mellor will also feature.

July 23-24: Giselle
The Guangzhou Ballet, led by ‘famous’ Zhang Dandan himself, is bringing Giselle to the capital. The company puts on traditional Chinese plays, like Lanhuahua, but they also like to dabble in Western works both modern and classical. Giselle is an example of the latter, a French oldie reworked for the Chinese audience. The troupe performs frequently across Europe, Asia and the US, so you may want to catch them while they’re here.

July 24: Cuandixia
Spend a day in Cuandixia, a picturesque mountain village that has remained largely untouched since the Ming dynasty. The centerpieces here are twin temples, one for a god and one for a goddess, with nice views of the whole village in all its gloriously dated architecture. You’ll get to hear from the village head why most of Cuandixia’s inhabitants have the same surname and how the village avoided destruction through thousands of years of political turnover and war. Overnight trips are also an option, which include a visit to the Wise Water Village the next morning.
