Soundbites are pieces of food and drink related news and gossip to aid your digestion of the Shanghai dining scene.
Let's be honest, donuts are woefully underrepresented in Shanghai. Looking to rectify that situation are a trio of self-proclaimed donut dreamers with their no-holds-barred take on everyone's favorite childhood treat. Behind Happy Ending is a dream team consisting of creatives Andrew Moo and Clara Davis, plus pastry chef Maris Brasil Marotta.

Go ahead and block off Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1 on your calendars right now, because you will want to eat each and every item on the menu at least once during their upcoming Madison Kitchen pop-up. We received a box of the sticky, guilty treasures and can not get them off our minds. They are amazing. Just look at these pictures.
Raspberry Beret

Beautifully crafted, this raspberry coulis and jam-filled baby, topped with pistachios and flowers, has stolen our hearts. Everything from the perfect dough to the bold, berry filling just works here. The messiness, makes our inner child love it that much more.

Tira Miss You

This decadent filled donut borrows the flavors of a classic Italian tiramisu. Espresso, creamy vanilla custard, and coffee liqueur will power you up for hours upon hours of late-night mischief. An adorable kissy face emoji atop shiny glaze make it hard to resist a bite.
Lemon Crème Brûlée

The burnt sugar topping on this lemon custard stuffed donut takes one to another level. Crunching through a layer of crackly sugar is half the fun. The mouth-puckering burst of sweet and sour lemon completes the experience.
Golden Arches

If you were making a donut for some 'Crazy Rich Asians,' this would be it. This crazy variety combines the flavors of North American breakfast (bacon and maple) with the inspired addition of salted duck egg and some flecks of gold leaf. Cause you fancy!
Rainbow Chocolate

This chocolate cake version is a time machine to the tastes and smells of childhood. We don't know about you, but we never get too old for rainbow sprinkles. Dark chocolate balances things out for a surprising improvement on our memories.
Sugar 'n Spice

Sugar and spice are everything nice, and this cakey wonder is kicked into high gear with the inspired addition of garam masala. This donut's use of the Indian spice is a wonderous clash of new flavors in a familiar way.
And more...

The fun doesn't end with that wonderous line-up of sweet artisan donuts. We have our eye on a more substantial treat called The Dirty Dog (on the back left in the image above). The hot dog is topped with jalapeño mustard, slow-cooked pork shoulder chili, avocado crema, radishes, scallions and crushed Fritos. And it comes in a donut bun (obviously).

Did you think they forgot the drinks? Quite the contrary: they have actually enlisted the cocktail expertise of local distillers Peddlers Gin Co. for a special menu four paired cocktails as well as optional shot add-ons for some donuts.
Show up and show them some love, because this pop-up could be the launch of something big. Get yours from 9pm-2am from Friday, August 31-Saturday, September 1. We promise not to eat all the donuts before you arrive — well, we will try.
