A That's series where we ask a Shanghai-based somebody to tell us 5 Things specific to his or her life.
These days we are starving for good food news, so imagine our delight when we came across photos of mouth-watering Polish paczki in our WeChat moments feed. It turns out that the Pierogi Ladies have decided to brighten up our Fat Thursday with these stuffed donuts. We turned to Gosia Modlińska for the low down on this traditional delicacy. You only have until midnight February 19 to get your orders, so place your order now.
1. Those who don't eat a stack of paczki on Fat Thursday will have an empty barn and their field destroyed by mice
There are a lot of proverbs and idioms relating to paczki, and Poland's love affair with donuts dates back to the 16th century. Not only are they believed to bring happiness, but refusing to eat this is considered rude and unlucky.
2. My favorite flavor is definitely the rose jam
We are also making strawberry, blueberry and Nutella filled ones.
3. My grandmother and mom sent me and my father to pick wild rose petals
When we returned from the park, I made a rose petal jam with my grandma. I looked forward to this every spring. My best memories are of the process rather than eating them.
4. Every Pole eats two and a half paczki on Fat Thursday
That's what some studies say, but I can only eat two in one sitting. They are super sweet.
5. Poland is a Catholic country
Our traditions come from that. Fat Thursday kicks off the last days of Carnival. The next week is the start of Lent, which means 40 days of fasting and abstinence. That's why people go crazy for donuts for an entire day without guilt.
