The lastest venue on the chopping block in this season of closures is a doozy: Hongqiao's Red Town, the home of music venue On Stage as well as several art galleries, restaurants and an open grassy space dotted with surreal statues, will be no more come summer. The building's management is razing the grassy lawn and moving the statues in order to build a new complex. Apparently, disembodied ceramic legs and brick car statues might add a lot of atmosphere, but they don't bring in much profit.
Red Town first opened in 2005, and is probably best known for On Stage, an underrated live music venue that hosts everything from local metal showcases to international electronic music.
On Stage's management has stated that they'll be reopening in a new space, but have not announced where or when. The venue shares ownership with JZ Club, however, so if that club's phoenix rise at Found 158 is any indication, we haven't seen the last of On Stage.
The closure is slated for late June or early July, so you've still got time to wander among the sculptures during the next sunny day. On Stage will continue holding concerts and shows for the next few months, as well. Local theater troupe DreamWeaver's rendition of the classic musical Godspell is on there at the end of April; check thatsmags.com for updates on other big shows.
