Shanghai city officials recently announced an urban renewal plan that aims to replace 105 square kilometers of illegal buildings with recreational areas, including walking paths, waterside terraces and sculptures.

The plan is one of 120 major municipal projects to be undertaken in 2017, with a total investment of more than RMB130 million (US$19 million).

About 480,000 sqm of old housing in the downtown area and 44,000 sqm in the suburbs have been targeted for renovation.

The renewal process is already underway in Jing’an. The government announced that by February, an estimated 77,600 sqm of illegal buildings within 10 meters of the banks of the district’s 11 rivers had already been demolished.
