A total of 20 venues in Shanghai have agreed to use age as the criteria to differentiate adult and child ticket fees, reports Shine.

Previously, many tourist attractions would offer half-price promotions or even free entry to kids. However, most places would use height to determine whether children are qualified to enjoy the benefits. Currently, only 6.2% of the venues in the Yangtze River Delta region (Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui) take both age and height as criteria.

Last year, a father in Guangdong even sued Shanghai Disney because he had to purchase an adult ticket for his 10-year-old son, who was too tall for the resort’s height standard.

This may explain why Shanghai Disney is among the 20 venues that adopted the new price policy. According to the resort, they are still discussing the details and will announce the new policy soon.

Other tourist spots on the list are Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, Jin Mao Tower, Madame Tussauds, Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park, Happy Valley Shanghai, Jinjiang Amusement Park, Shanghai Changfeng Ocean World, Legoland Discovery Center, Playa Maya Water Park, Shanghai Auto Museum and Dino Beach.

It is worth noting that several renowned attractions around Shanghai like Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai Wild Animal Park won’t employ the new policy since it may cause too much congestion.

The new policy is being promoted by the consumer councils among the Yangtze River Delta region. Together, there are already 242 tourist spots within the area which have promised to change their admission policy. Whenever a kid is too tall, they can still enjoy the discounts as long as they have certificate (like ID card) to prove their age.

“This is our first practice as a league for consumer councils among the Delta region,” explains Tao Ailian, secretary general of the Shanghai Consumer Council. “By doing this, we hope to elevate the service quality and attract more tourists to tour the region. In the future, we will do more to bring real benefits to consumers.”
