A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:

1. IdleBeats: Tale of Two Cities 2

Idle Beats: Tale of Two Cities 2

Shanghai screen printing institutions Idle Beats team with Phnom Penh based Sticky Fingers Art Print to showcase works from both cities. Nini Sum debuts her new Statue portrait series and Gregor Koerting continues his Real Big City series. 20 percent off prints on the December 10 opening from 1-7pm.
Dec 10-Jan 9. Bldg 2, 65 Songyuan Lu, by Huangjincheng Lu

2. Dragon Liver Phoenix Brain

Dragon Liver Phoenix Brain (Hu Xiangqian)

The title of this year’s OCAT’s Shanghai annual young artists project “combines the literal meaning of ‘rare delicacy’ with the formal quality of kung-fu movie titles, and a hint of sexuality.” Eight participating artists have been given eight independent rooms to showcase a variety of works that span from video to sculpture and performance. The show plays with the idea of exhibition spaces as interiors/exteriors, with the location of the works with different rooms playing with gender combinations playing a role. While the works will make their debut on December 11, some of the participating artists like Hu Xiangqian are also involved in the 11th Shanghai Biennale at Power Station of Art (pictured). Opens on December 10 at 5pm.
Dec 11-Feb 12. OCT Contemporary Art Terminal.

3. Yang Fudong: Moving Mountains

3. Yang Fudong: Moving Mountains

The celebrated Chinese contemporary artist and cinematographer premiers his latest work, a 46-minute black-and-white film inspired by the ancient tale of a man, many dubbed foolish, seeking to move a mountain. Visually, Moving Mountains takes its cues from the 1940s ink paintings of Xu Beihong. Popular actress Wan Qian stars. Opening reception on December 11 at 3pm.
Dec 13-Jan 5. Shanghai Center of Photography, 2555 Longteng Avenue, by Fenggu Lu 龙腾达到2555号, 近丰谷路 (6428 9516)

4. S-VA-HA: Shangri-La

S-VA-HA: Shangri-La

Japanese contemporary Buddhist art group S-VA-HA present video art composed of sutra chanting and text reading in this wryly titled exhibition. Set up to appear as a souvenir gift shop, Shangri-La explores the dark side of tourism and its use as a term used to signify paradise by luxury hotels and Asian pop songs. The exhibition also commemorates the 70th anniversary of Hiroshima.
Until Dec 18. MoCA Pavilion.

5. Ann Niu: Microcosm

Ann Niu: Microcosm

Paying homage to the spiritual and esoteric qualities given to stones throughout Chinese tradition, Ann Niu uses them as a metaphor to explore existence. Landscapes are drawn on their surfaces to create eye popping works.
Until Dec 30. ArtCN.

6. Guo Peng: Essentially Empty Essentially Full

Guo Peng: Essentially Empty Essentially Full

The Sichuan born artist presents over a decade of his works that range from experiments with holepunched adaptions of public domain images to his sparse work with empty photographic paper.
