A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:
1. The Uncertain, or the Shelved ...
More than 30 artists like Xu Zhen (see cover image) and Zhang Enli (see above) contribute pieces that drift away from their usual practices in this group exhibition that explores works and ideas created during an initial burst of creativity (‘the uncertain’) that have been put away as the artist searched for further ideas to finish the piece (‘the shelved’). The show provides a unique insight into the artistic creation process. Opens on Saturday, July 16 from 3-6pm.
July 16-Aug 31. ShanghART Gallery Main & H Space.
2. Between Streets and Mountains
Arario Gallery hosts this group exhibition featuring four Filipino artists (Geraldine Javier, Leslie de Chavez (see above), MM Yu and Buen Calubayan whose works explore the rich yet tumultuous cultural history of the country across a variety of mediums. Opening reception on Saturday, July 16 from 5-7pm.

3. An Afternoon with Mr. Yang
Kick the Gong Around has organized this fair to support calligraphy craftsman and Luxun Park staple Mr. Yang, who was recently hospitalized. Join friends of the community who will be mixing food and drink pop-ups with numerous art performances including a traditional fan dance and a live painting exhibition from Mr. Yang himself. 15 percent of F&B sales will be donated to Mr. Yang. For more, check out our interview with KTGA's Regina Hayes about the fundraiser.

4. B-Movie
Originally a term from the Great Depression to describe crude double bill movies, B-Movies have inspired Hong Kong’s cinematic glory days of the 1980s and 90s while becoming critically accepted and often revered. J:Gallery hosts this group exhibition featuring eight emerging artists from China and East Asia (Jian Ce, Zhong Yunshu, Xie Kan, Liu Zhangbolong, Tan Tian, Wang Ge, Zheng Tianming and Haffendi Anuar), who have created rebellious works partially inspired by their experiences of living abroad.

5. Alberto Giacometti Retrospective
Following the smashing success of Rain Room, Budi Tek’s Yuz Museum host this immense retrospective exhibition devoted to one of the 20th century’s greatest sculptors. Regarded as a modernist master, Giacometti had a profound impact on post-War art, earning the moniker ‘the artist of artists.’ 250 masterpieces created from 1917 to 1966 will be on display.
