The second edition of the B:Polar parties, which pairs seemingly disparate musical artists goes Nordic. Gloriously 90s indie pop band Death Team has been dubbed a perfect mix of ABBA and Eminem, thanks to anthems like ‘Fucking Bitches in the Hood.’ They’re joined by Copenhagen darkwave duo First Hate, who will be celebrating the release of their second EP. Past B:Polar guest Lydmor will spin, as she moves to the city to work on her next album.

Apr 29: Gabriele Poso

Chic ’n Pop presents the Sardinian multi-instrumentalist who has taken the alternative jazz scene by storm. He’s worked with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Louie Vega and Osunlade, while releasing solo albums on the prestigious German !K7 dance label.

Apr 29-30: ABBA Tribute Concert

The Pearl and Urban Aphrodite pay tribute to the iconic Swedish pop group, who have sold hundreds of millions of records while famously capturing the Eurovision Song Contest title in 1974. Expect some of the city’s finest musicians to perform such classic hits as ‘Mamma Mia,’ ‘Waterloo’ and ‘Dancing Queen.’

Apr 30-May 2: JZ Spring

Over 200 musicians will converge in Jiogn'an for the third annual JZ Spring. Stages will be set up at Jing'an Park, Jing'an Temple, Jing An kerry Center and many other unexpected placees for a weekend of free performances. With a theme of "When Jazz Meets China," the festival kicks off with an April 29 Master concert between award-winning Luxembourg trumpet player Gast Waltzing and JZ Club fixture Li Xiaochuan. The next night, Jesse Harris and Petra Haden will present the Chinese debut of their collaborative project. The festival culminates with a Master Hall concert feautirng Abu and Eddie Dainels Quartet. Apr 30-May 2: Strawberry Music Festival

Modern Sky takes over Expo Park for their fourth annual music festival and there's a distinct British electronic feel with Disclosure, The Prodigy and Modestep performing. As always, many of China's top bands will also perform to the adorning masses, with plenty of on-site markets and other festival accouterments. For more, check out our Strawberry Festival picks.

Apr 30-May 2: Taihu MIDI Festival

China’s longest-running festival brand returns just outside of Shanghai. International guests include M83 cofounder Nicolas Fromageau's electronic music project Team Ghost and the Canadian progressive metal standouts Protest the Hero. As usual, the festival is also full of the country's most exciting rock acts including festival fixtures Nova Heart, SMZB and Miserable Faith.

Urban folk is the music of choice for Chinese wenqing and local troubadours take over Yuyintang in this popular recurring series.

Jiang Huang Quintet
The ace pianist leads a quintet of Shanghai jazz all-stars through adaptive versions of the classics.

J3 Trio
The elegiac modern jazz trio are among the standouts that JZ Club has produced in recent years.

Christian Blackshaw
The celebrated pianist has graced most of the world’s most prestigious stages. For his China debut, he takes over the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall.

Michael Learns to Rock 25th Anniversary
The Danish soft-rockers scored a Mainland hit with 2006’s ‘Take Me to Your Heart.’ They celebrate their milestone anniversary by bringing their world tour to Plus Space in Pudong.

Linctus and Mary See the Future
Taiwan rockers Linctus have scored Golden Melody nominations for their Brit-pop rooted alternative rock. They team with rising indie rockers Mary See the Future, who tout a sound inspired by the Vaccines and Placebo.

Shen Ma Dong Xi Rock Party
MAO Livehouse kicks off the May holidays with this local showcase featuring hometown rockers Parachutes on Fire, Jacknapes and Zinapunx.

Ego Pusher
Before their Strawberry Music Festival show, the Swiss group play a more intimate affair at Yuyintang.

The Order of Chaos Tour
The Alberta hard rockers have been wowing crowds since 2003 with an energetic sound and the vocals of frontwoman Amanda Kiernan.

The Summer Rock Party
Hometown heroes FNFAL, Beat Generation 1980’s, Prank, Revival and 21 Grams celebrate the May holidays by rocking Yuyintang.

JZ All Star Big Band conducted by Alec Haavik
It’s just a few more weeks before JZ Club’s May 14 closing concert for its Fuxing Lu location and for International Jazz Day, club fixture Alec Haavik conducts the JZ Big Band.

Spring Wave
A huge festival in Taiwan, Spring Wave takes over Dishui Lake for a massive Mandopop showcase. Stars S.H.E. and Soda Green headline while Mainland act Omnipotent Youth Society represents for the domestic indie scene. There will be a creative market and other on-site activities, plus despite how long it takes to get there, Dishui Lake is a gorgeous escape out of the city.

Changjiang International Music Festival 2016
The Backstreet Boys and Cui Jian headline this music festival held a couple hours outside of Shanghai. The father of Mainland rock and the boy band hall of famers highlight an eclectic bill that includes Mandopop stars (Stefanie Sun, Sandy Lam), indie-favorites (Omnipotent Youth Society) and international metal acts (Onslaught, Scream Maker).

Nocturnal Bloodlust
The extreme visual kei rockers have repeatedly topped the Japanese indie charts.
