A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:
1. Chen Nong: A Play in a Play
OFOTO hosts the latest works by Beijing based artist Chen Nong. Known for his dramatic works that double as visual feasts. This latest series features 16 works inspired by the stories and myths of the Silk Road like Han Dynasty diplomat Zhang Qian’s journey to the West, Qin Shi Huangdi burning books and burying scholars alive and the travels of Tang Dynasty princess Wencheng to marry Tibetan patriarch SongtsenGampo. Opens on March 12 from 4-6pm.

2. Two Magnum Masters - Barbey, Berry
Down in the West Bund, the Shanghai Centre of Photography hosts this exhibition celebrating respected photographers Ian Berry and Bruno Barbey of the legendary Magnum collective. For this show, the artists present iconic images from their broader career from Berry’s work in South Africa in 1960 to Bruno Barbey’s images from his travels around the world like the above shot of 1968 Paris.

3. Space Touching of Defamiliarization
Devoted to spotlighting emerging talents in China’s art scene, C14 Gallery has moved from its Gao’an Lu digs to open the first art gallery situated within the Pudong Expo Area. They’re taking advantage of the extra space with the venue’s opening exhibition, This group show features Anderson & Low, Christian Chambenoit, Liz Hingley, Guo Guozhu, Yan Yibo and Zhang Jin, Opening party takes place on March 13 from 1-4pm.

4. John Moores Painting Prize (China) Exhibition
The UK’s famed art competition has been running a biannual China edition since 2010. M21 hosts this group exhibition featuring some of the nominees including Han Feng, Zhang Zhenxue, Zheng Haozhong (pictured above), Zhong Lexing and more.

5. Youn Myeung-Ro: Plateau
The Hengshan Feng gallery hosts the Shanghai stop of celebrated Korean contemporary artist Youn Myeung-Ro’s China tour. Since dabbling with abstractions in the 1960s, Youn has chased his own artistic muse, working with tortoise shells in the 1970s to explore the ontological nature of painting, working with minimal pencil drawing and paper in the 1980s, and using acrylics and oxidized powders on linen canvas this millennium.

6. WE: A Community of Chinese Contemporary Artists
After hosting a massive Dali exhibition, chi K11 pays tribute to China’s contemporary art with this massive group exhibition. 57 artists contribute works spanning a variety of mediums from painting to mixed media, including notable artists like Zhang Enli, Zhang Peili and Lu Yang. Every Sunday afternoon, the exhibition will host a lecture or interactive performance.
