Shanghai Restaurant Review: Bad Boy Bangers

The place

As a British person, let it be (sadly) said that there are few places you can go for good British food in Shanghai. *Insert joke about English food here.* Until now. East Londoner Deji Odunlami is seeking to change that with his new café and housemade sausage shop, Bad Boy Bangers

The food

For such a small space, there’s a lot going on in the way of eats. Sausages in buns, sandwiches, cheese melts and even brunch. Behold, bangers and mash with onion gravy (RMB58)! Hot sausage rolls!

For any homesick Brit, this is a revelation. But wait, it gets realer. They also do a full English breakfast, with eggs, sausage, house-cured bacon, hash browns, toast, tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans (RMB62).

We tried the ‘Sweet & Spicy & Sour’ (RMB28), a chorizo-y sausage with aoli and fermented salsa, which was delicious. You also have the option of ‘mother loading’ with an extra sausage (RMB12), and we’d recommend that for this one since the chorizo sausages are quite skinny, and size does matter.

See also this ‘mother loaded’ pork sausage bun with caramelized onion and Dijon mustard. Ask for yours a little lighter on the onions – they’re good but you don’t want them overpowering the sausage. And definitely add HP Sauce on top.

Food verdict: 2/3

The vibe

The only wenti with Bad Boy Bangers is the space. It’s a little small, by which we mean there are only tables on the street and a small bar inside. Fine for warm weather or if you’re eating a takeaway sausage bun, but problematic for a full English or bangers and mash. We wouldn’t be opposed to eating that on the go or at one of the bars on neighboring Yongkang Lu, but it’s more of a logistical challenge. And besides, it means you can’t have a glass of the RMB30 Malbeck (an obvious necessity).

Vibe verdict: 0.5/1

Value for money

If space is Bad Boy Bangers’ foible, value for money is their strength. You could quite easily be full from one of their ‘mother loaded’ sausage baps (RMB28-40), and certainly with the bangers and mash (RMB58), both reasonably priced. You can also buy their any of their housemade sausages for cooking at home.

Value for money: 1/1

TOTAL VERDICT: 3.5/5

Price: RMB28-80

Who’s going: British expats

Good for: British food, sausages, sandwiches, brunch
