The Chinese captain of an 80-ton fishing boat was shot dead by the South Korean Coast Guard 144 kilometers west of North Jeolla Province on Friday morning, after officials say he resisted arrest for fishing illegally in South Korean waters.

Coast Guard officials claim that they questioned the fishermen on board at 8:30am local time. After the Chinese fisherman, surnamed Song, fiercely resisted, three blank bullets and eight rounds of live ammunition were fired with a K5 pistol by a Coast Guard agent. Song, 45, died shortly after being airlifted to the Mokpo Hospital.

The hospital said that the left side of the fisherman's stomach was hurt by the pistol, according to the CT result. A piece of 1.8 centimeter bullet was found in the fisherman's body.

China has not yet responded to the incident.
